Porthole Square


Hi Everyone

So, Porthole Square... intrigued???  This is something I came up with a few months ago, and I thought it was about time to share it with you all.  I love 'em, and can think of lots and lots of uses in many different ways.  I'm planning on making a mobile case and possibly a laptop and kindle case; I also have a couple of ideas to make these into bags.  Anyway... you don't particularly care about that do you...  you just want to know what they are and how to make them right?


Don't you love them?  I adore the way the outer circle is pulled into a perfect circle when you join the top layer to the bottom...  Not difficult to make, I'll walk you through it below.

One Porthole Square...  but you don't have to put the inner circle in if you don't want to...  Just leave it out, and start with the outer circle...  you can put fabric behind instead if you prefer...



Let your imagination run away with you...  ok, I'm off now to fight my sweet cravings!

    oh,forgot one thing-that Porthole square is just pure genius(can't spell to save my life)and it made me smile too. I'm obcessed with circles(and squares,and everything crochet, ummm flowers especially)and I feel a new obcession about to begin-portholes!

    Oh I do love this, I really do! I've been wanting to combine my love of crochet with my love of pretty fabrics for so long, but as I can only sew by hand (machinery and I don't get on...oh no!), I hadn't come up with any good ideas. Now you have, and I thank you muchly :)

    These are so creative! I crochet a lot of squares for a group called Knit-a-Square (http://www.knit-a-square.com/), they distribute blankets to AIDS orphans in South Africa, I'd love to share this pattern with them if it's ok with you. I plan on making many of these to send to them!

    Oww...I have been surching for a nice coaster pattern for some time...and saw soooo many coasters, but they all just didn't 'do' it for me, but these are something completly different and exactly what I'm looking for...thank you so much for sharing! They are now on the top of my "to-do list"!!

    Yes, gorgeous... how did you attach the fabric? I'm sure you can make inner circle (red) then the gray and then slip in the fabric --- but if you didn't do the inner square, did you sew it with invisible thread? thank you,

    I am in love with this square and am currently making squares for an exchange. I plan to switch my pattern over to this one and was just curious about using fabric. I haven't mixed the two mediums before and I'm just wondering the best way to attach the fabric to the yarn.

    What a fabulous idea! I can see this hole made in numerous ways! I have a huge stash of fabric leftovers that are to nice to throw away and this would make a tremendous use of those scraps and at the same time clearing out my wardrobe!

    Hi. Along time ago we made several blankets and scarves with a crochet block very similar to yours. Done a bit differently we used an inserted crochet flower in the center that priteuded out a bit. I will have to look and see if I still have the pattern.
